Diatom Research Laboratory

Exploring the world of Diatoms: Nature’s microscopic powerhouses

About Us

The Diatom Research Laboratory (DRL), established in 2018, is an academic research group focusing on
microalgae, specifically diatoms. Our work lies at the intersection of basic research and early-stage
technology development, where we explore the diversity, biology, and biotechnological applications of these
fascinating microorganisms in diverse environments like wastewater, aquaculture systems, and
pharmaceutical-contaminated sites. The lab also conducts studies on mass cultivation, nanomaterial synthesis,
and drug delivery applications using diatom frustules. In addition to core research, the lab engages in
biomonitoring, phycoremediation, metabolites profiling, bioactive compound extraction, and environmental
assessments and sustainability studies. The laboratory shares its findings through scientific publications and
provides consultancy and training services for researchers, institutions, and industry stakeholders interested in
microalgal technologies.

About Us

The Diatom Research Laboratory (DRL), established in 2018, is an academic research group focusing on microalgae, specifically diatoms. Our work lies at the intersection of basic research and early-stage technology development, where we explore the diversity, biology, and biotechnological applications of these
fascinating microorganisms in diverse environments like wastewater, aquaculture systems, and pharmaceutical-contaminated sites. The lab also conducts studies on mass cultivation, nanomaterial synthesis, and drug delivery applications using diatom frustules. Our Vision

Our vision is to build a future where diatoms and microalgae catalyze
sustainable solutions for a cleaner environment, healthier
communities. We aim to develop an integrated biorefinery approach,
harnessing diatoms from diverse resources such as wastewater and
contaminated waters to produce high-value products while restoring
ecological balance aligning with a circular bioeconomy.

Our Mission

Established in 2018, the mission of the Diatom Research Laboratory (DRL) is to carry out basic research on microalgae, especially diatoms. We focus on their isolation, cultivation, and characterization, and explore their potential to develop simple, sustainable solutions for environmental and biological applications. Our work includes studying diatoms in wastewater environments, extracting useful compounds, and understanding their role in areas like nanomaterials and bio-based products. We also share our knowledge through training and consultancy.
